2021 and COVID-19 vaccines

Updated: Mar 14, 2022

Looking back, it's evident that 2021 was a roller coaster ride when it comes to SARS-CoV-2. Scientists have tried every possible measure to triumph over the pandemic with mixed success so far. Vaccines proved to be the most significant defense against the COVID-19 pandemic among the many armors that came to fruition.

Although the year started full of hope, as vaccines were developed and distributed in record time, several factors—the virus' ongoing evolution, inequitable global vaccine distribution, hesitancy against vaccination, and the natural course of waning vaccine effectiveness—led to a situation that even the most effective vaccines of the era could not combat.

Even though the vaccines can't single-handedly end the pandemic, because they are safe and effective against emerging variants, global vaccination has been deemed the best option against COVID-19 and help to return life to normalcy.
