Home testing for syphilis gains support in wake of COVID

Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) also known as Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) is an infection of the genitourinary system transmitted through sexual contact. The burden of STDs/STIs in the US is high with the CDC estimates of 1 in 5 people (about 20 percent of the U.S. population), and if untreated promptly, can lead to bladder problems, damage to organs, reduced life expectancy, infertility in women, and other complications.

Successful management of STIs starts with its prompt and accurate diagnosis. Because of the enigma, non-acceptance and hesitancy associated with the nature of the infections, several cases of STIs remain undiagnosed. To allow individuals to test privately and affordably and encouraged by the success of at-home tests for COVID-19, many researchers, policymakers and affected communities have embraced self-testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Although self-testing might increase the testing and seems promising for future, as of now, the use of a cutting age diagnostic test like Acutis Reveal™ STI that utilizes the PCR guided enhanced AST technology which can identify the presence of specific STI pathogens along with their antibiotic sensitivity profile in a measurably faster turnaround time of 8-12 hours from the sample receipt, seems to be the way to go for now.
