Rising STI cases caused by the COVID-19 pandemic?

Updated: Dec 15, 2021

The Guardian recently reported that while much healthcare funding has been allocated to COVID-19 pandemic prevention measures, STI rates are rising again. Experts say the rise in STI cases is the result of changing behaviors as pandemic-related restrictions lift nationwide, problems surrounding STI education and awareness, decreasing condom use, and issues within our public healthcare infrastructure.

Similar to other health epidemics, such as the opioid crisis and mental health conditions, the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the accessibility of testing, treatment, and other resources. In an attempt to combat the STI crisis, Congress increased STI prevention funding and health officials have created the first-ever STI National Strategic Plan to improve sexual health nationwide in the next 4-5 years.

While the government and officials determine the best ways to battle the rise in infections, we encourage regular STI testing for sexually active individuals to protect their health and the health of others. STIs can lead to severe health consequences when left undetected or untreated, and common STI symptoms can be associated with other infections. Therefore, getting tested is the only way to conclusively determine the type of infection and the proper treatment plan.

As a leader in infectious disease testing, we recognize the need for accurate STI testing to get patients the answers needed and allow practitioners to determine the best course of intervention. Identify the presence of specific sexually transmitted infection pathogens in a measurably faster turnaround time with our newest line of testing-- Acutis Reveal™ STI. Learn more about the benefits of Acutis Reveal™ STI.
