The opioid epidemic – A public health emergency

In 2017, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) officially declared a public health emergency in response to the opioid epidemic. According to the NCDAS – National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics:

  • Almost 50,000 people die every year from opioid overdose

  • Over 10,000,000 people misuse opioids in a year

In New York alone, 15 out of every 100,000 residents die from an opioid overdose – 3.4% above the national death rate.
